Task One -
In the first shot we see a four shot with a handheld camera aimed slightly down as the characters are sat on a step in a graveyard. As they take drugs, it is edited with a shot which the camera tilts up at the sun making it overexposed. It jump cuts between the two. As it continues in this fashion the shot that tilts up, creates a lens flare. This makes you aware that you're watching a film; rather than being immersed in 'their' world. In this film the directors do things that isn't 'textbook' compared to how everyone is used to. This creates a new wave of films.
The sound is diegetic but then there's a voiceover that is unclear, at some times it is diegetic and at others it is non-diegetic. The voiceover talks about Jesus' resurrection. This gives religious connotations. With the narration in the background/overlaid, with the rest of the graveyard footage. I realised that it is a reading from the Bible. This creates controversy as they are taking drugs but speaking the word of God.
Including a range of camera shots I saw a close up on the woman, a highly tilted shot towards the sky but a lot of the video is from a handheld camera. There's shots of the sun, quickly zooms in and blurs intensely to warm colour shot. The shot of a man with his face against statue crying "shut up", this quickly edited shot and others mixed with the audio creates a montage sequence. The preferred reading of this video could be that the audience can see what it's like to be on drugs demoting the use it.
As this was produced in the late 60's, this could be filtered into New Hollywood. I know this because overlapped sequences and extensive use of drugs/religious connotations aren't typically used in traditional American films.
