- Make sure that all wires are neat, this in case of someone tripping on them and hurting themselves
- In case of a fire or a needed use for an emergency exit, signs must be prominent
- Food and drink are a huge hazard around electrical equipment
- In a studio the kit can get hot, so don't touch bulbs that have been on for a while in case of burning yourself. As well as this, they are very bright so its important to try and not look at them or for too long and don't shine bright lights at others.
- If you require help, you can always ask for it even more so when lifting heavy items.
- overcrowding in small spaces. In the studio it can get crowded, it is easy for people to get in the way so keep the number of people to a minimum.

New Wave and Evaluation
Finished Video
Evaluation
After I finished editing the New Wave piece I was able to incorporate a few of the ideas that I planned to do before hand. The main idea of that I want to include POV (Point Of View) shots. As Jack filmed it, I was able to cut down very long shots into shorter ones. A 7 minute long take was included but by using mini jump cuts it fits to the length of the song. A editing technique that I thought of while editing that worked out quite well what to pace the clips very slightly apart so when playback it seems like he's blinking. This works even better as the camera is in first person.
The non-diegetic sound that I chose fits with the editing pace, even though some parts are sped up. I also included two different 'rule of threes' as the camera/camera man was shown on reflective surfaces, this can take audiences out of their immersion but this is done on purpose. Another 'rule of threes' that I included was that the audio would cut out and the raw diegetic sound would play.
The main point that I wanted to make while editing this piece was that a first person 'vlog' can still be shot in a new wave style of light. With natural lighting and casual conversations it is shot to be as normal as possible but as the diegetic sound plays phrases like "let's go shoot a new wave film" it creates a sense of. uniqueness as to my knowledge not many other new wave pieces do this.
2 min New Wave Sequence Brief
New Wave Brief
For this on location shoot we shot in Coventry,
A technical aspect that we would like to use heavily is using a continuous POV shot. This is not conventional of most films that are showcased in American New Wave and does class as a shot type that is more commonly used in films that are New Wave.
In terms of the mise-en-scene: lighting, sound and editing these settings will be set to a more natural state. With similar aspects as 'found footage' we aim for immersion in a natural way.
Something that I find quite interesting in new wave films is that they're sometimes badly edited on purpose. For this I will aim to included a range of odd but intriguing editing styles along side the non-diegetic and diegetic sound. For the music that I will aim for is a simple and chill beat, something that would be not relied on but an aspect of the piece that would seem strange without. Maybe even an audience would be able to appreciate as even though not much is happening they will be able to link the music to the action on screen. In this case a slow/chill beat would fit nicely against the person walking and doing activities that doesn't require any excitement or stress.
I will also like to incorporate sped up footage as these are long takes, I would like to show a lot of them in a short time. However, another way which I might try out is to edit pieces out so even though the forge is playing at a normal speed, it is quick and snappy in terms of when it is cut. For example, a minute long video can be shortened by cutting out three seconds when five seconds pass. Creating mini jump-cuts.
I would like to include a rule of three, but I am not sure which I prefer. Maybe a phrase being said, the audience being able to see the camera or an action from other people on screen. (I will test them and see which one I like best)
Something that I think would be quite nice to add in is that in parts a phrase is said. Most of the time the non-diegetic sound will be playing but I think that the piece would be more unique if in the editing process I don't mute some of the clips, maybe do it on key phrases so that the audience knows there watching a film rather than being immersed.

Door - four hour film challenge
Door
Plan:
The brief we were given for this piece was just to include a door. We decided that it would be a good idea to involve a door that appears to be magic. We aim to show this by the door only opening to some and not to others. On the other side of the door I thought of having a concert going on. While editing that would be fun as the music going on in the background and behind the door will change as the door opens and closes.
We hope to include a range of shots as we have just leant about 'Match-on-action'. Therefore, using one camera will be a challenge as we will have to line up the actions that happen on screens between takes.
Good:

Good:
- sound worked well with opening and closing the door
- Kuleshov effect
Improvement:
- need to tighten up shots
- more variety of shots (PoV)
Evaluation:
We struggled to match top all of the shots so for next time it would be better if two or more cameras are used rather than relying on one camera. That way, the shots will line up better and when editing, more of a choice is given as in post we can choose which shots suit better at certain moments. We didn't include a POV shot, so for next time it would look good to add one or two to help immerse the audience rather than force them out of the piece. However, the idea about the sound frequencies to change as the door opens and closes worked well.

4 hour film challenge - Fifty Shades of Egg
We all watched the video twice. One to take it in and a second to analysis the piece. As we went for more of a comedic approach, luckily the rest of the group agreed. We did this by timing the shots and where they were cut.
Things done well:
- The range of shots and how they were edited together/pacing
- Able to create a main character out of an inanimate object
- cool interpretation as we used a Fifty Shades of Grey voiceover
Room for Improvement:
- Eggsperiment with lighting. We only used natural lighting and therefore, as the room was slightly too dark. I had to change the aperture and the ISO. Unfortunately, this means some of the shots we used have slightly more grain than others.
- To incorporate more props – we thought about this while we were shooting but as in subject is inanimate we found it difficult
- To include different backgrounds e.g. outside
- Push to be more original and more titles – maybe have our own voiceover with the signature deep movie voice

Lighting
A fairly simple Light set up. Position one light to the side of the subject about 90º while shooting from the front. Normally shown in film noir. Used in interrogation scenes.
A similar set up to a Split shot but more of a 45º angle where the light is positioned. This shot is famous for the triangle of light of the more shaded side of the face or subject. I found this particularly difficult as I had to find the right angle for the light to be aimed at my subject.
In order to achieve this shot the use of one light is needed as well. Aimed above the camera so that a shadow is produced under the nose.
Unfortunately, my footage is very slightly out of focus. Even though I checked on the small monitor on the camera, and it appeared to be correctly focussed but for some reason it came out just out. When available, I will use a pro monitor so that my image is larger therefore, making my subject more precise. Another way to check for next time is to zoom in and when that's in focus it will appear crystal clear which will help ensure to focus is what I want it to be.

Aperture/Shutter Speed Task
Difference in motion blur
Shot from the first video with F30 with a higher shutter speed.
Shot from the video which uses F250 with a lower shutter speed.
Aperture affects the depth of field and this in turn effects the amount of light entering the lens.
- The higher the ISO the more grain will appear in the image but lower the ISO the darker and less grain will be present.
- The shutter speed is effected by the ratio. The higher it is e.g. 1/125 the less motion blur there will be but with a ratio of 4/1 or 1/1 the more motion blur there will be. to show this I used running water and the water splashes are more or less blurred.
The four key factors that affect aperture:
- The F stop
- Focal length (lenses)
- Focal Distance (between the end of the lens and the subject
- Physical Depth

Different Shot types...
Different Shot types...
A pull focus shot between Billy's face and the Laptop. The camera is kept still. This is used as a practice shot. Shot at 400 ISO.
This shot is a more focussed and is used as a shot that wasn't for practice. The extra depth between the two points of focus is more effective. However the camera is kept still as well. Shot at 200 ISO.
This shot was set to 1600 which makes it overexposed. A simple shot using a pan technique.
A much darker image as it's shot at 100 ISO, as the sun is present that it creates a better defined image. This shot also uses the pan technique.
An extreme close-up shot at 200 ISO. A large amount of pull focus was used in order to achieve this shot. Seen, the background is blurred while the foreground is in focus.
Self explained in the title, and shot at 1600. Meaning that it's overexposed. A combined usage of a tilt and a pan, I feel its used effectively as it shows all parts of the environment with this amount of light let into the lens.
Self explained; shot at 1600 ISO. slightly defocused.
Focused shot with a tilt/low angle shot. shaded area at 200 ISO is very nice lighting, I found.

Reflection:
What are the effects of ISO to moving image?
As you increase the ISO, more light is let in therefore, the camera is able to capture more light present without slowing down the shutter speed or changing the aperture.
What effect does 100 have? and 1600?
When the ISO is set at 100, the image is much darker compared to 1600. As well as this, at 1600, the image features more grain.
How have you exemplified this with your moving image?
At night, shooting at 100 and 200 ISO is very dark and difficult to see what is being shot. When shooting at 1600 ISO in the day, the image is too bright but is useful at night.
How effective are your videos?
Not very in the fact that there is no narrative. However, as someone who enjoys minimal narrative, creating experimental films, these clips could be used well with choppy editing.
What technical challenges did you face? How did you overcome them? Why?
At night it was difficult as I had to shoot at a low ISO, meaning that the image was too dark and nearly unusable if needed fro a real shoot.
How would you improve your work?
I would create more of a narrative or set up a nicer shot. The reason for this is that it visually looks nicer and therefore, more enjoyable for an audience. I would have gone about this by set up the right shutter speed, aperture and ISO to more of a fitting setting to my liking.
